  5. Windows* 95 installation notes for Intel's EtherExpress(TM) PRO/100+ PCI
  6. LAN Adapters

  13. General Instructions
  14. --------------------

  16. 1  Install the adapter in the computer and turn on the power.  Have the
  17.    Windows 95 CD ROM available, as you will need it to copy additional
  18.    files. While Windows 95 is starting, it will detect the new hardware.
  19.  
  20. 2  When Windows 95 starts, a NEW HARDWARE FOUND dialog box appears. It
  21.    identifies the adapter as a PCI Ethernet Controller.  Select the
  22.    option "Driver from disk provided by Hardware Manufacturer".
  23.    
  24.    NOTE: If the New Hardware Found dialog box doesn't appear, you'll need
  25.          to manually configure the adapter. See the section on
  26.          alternative ways to add a network adapter to Windows 95.
  27.  
  28. 3  Insert the EtherExpress PRO/100+ Configuration and Drivers disk in
  29.    drive A and click OK.
  30.  
  31. 4  A dialog box prompts for a location with "A:\". Click OK.
  32.  
  33. 5  A dialog may appear requesting Windows 95 system network files. If so,
  34.    follow the instructions.
  35.       
  36.       Note: The Windows 95 system files are typically available on the
  37.             Windows 95 CD in the win95 directory (D:\win95). If Windows
  38.             95 requests the E100B.DOS file, it can be found on the Intel
  39.             Configuration and Drivers disk, typically in A:.
  40.  
  41. 6  The Systems Setting Change dialog appears indicating you should
  42.    restart the system for changes to become effective.  Remove the
  43.    PRO/100+ adapter disk from the drive and click Yes for the changes to
  44.    take effect.
  45.    
  46.    NOTE: Windows 95 will reference this adapter's driver as "Intel 82557-
  47.          based PCI Ethernet" not "Intel EtherExpress PRO/100+ adapter".

  50. Installing Intel's PROSet adapter diagnostic and configuration software
  51. -----------------------------------------------------------------------
  52.  
  53. Intel's PROSet software allows you to test the adapter in the Windows 95
  54. environment.  It can also resolve some Windows 95 issues that may result
  55. from changing or updating adapter hardware.
  56.  
  57. 1  From the Explorer, double click on the 3.5 floppy disk icon.  The
  58.    Explore function can be accessed by clicking on the Windows 95 Start
  59.    button with the right mouse button.
  60.  
  61. 2  Locate the PROSet icon in the root directory of the diskette and click
  62.    the right mouse button.  From the menu that appears, click Install.
  63.  
  64. 3  When the PROSet software has been copied to your computer, go to the
  65.    control panel and click on the PROSet icon.  PROSet examines your
  66.    computer and displays the PROSet Window.  This window shows the
  67.    adapter's I/O address, interrupt and Ethernet address.
  68.    
  69.    Note: The adapter's interrupt is set by the computer's BIOS.  If you
  70.          have to change the interrupt, some computers allow you to change
  71.          this setting, and some don't. Check your computer's
  72.          documentation for details. PROSet will inform you of any
  73.          problems with the current setting.

  75. 4  Click Test to begin diagnostics.

  78. Advanced Configuration Parameters
  79. ---------------------------------
  80.  
  81. The defaults work correctly for most configurations. Please use caution
  82. when changing these parameters.  To make a change, follow the steps
  83. listed below.
  84.  
  85. Note: Be sure to use PROSet to configure these settings rather than the
  86.       Advanced Configuration tab under Properties. Since this driver also
  87.       supports all 82557-based adapters, some parameters have different
  88.       values depending on which adapter is installed.  PROSet will
  89.       display the proper values for the adapter you are configuring.  The
  90.       Properties screen may not.
  91.  
  92. 1  Double-click on the PROSet icon located in the Control Panel.
  93.  
  94. 2  Click on Change button.
  95.  
  96. 3  If you need to make changes to Speed and/or you are using a full
  97.    duplex hub, change these options on the Basic Settings menu.
  98.  
  99. 4  Click on Advanced.
  100.  
  101. 5  For the highlighted Property on the left, the Value is displayed on
  102.    the right.
  103.  
  104. Duplex Mode - Default Setting: Auto Duplex Detect
  105.    
  106.    A performance option that lets you choose how the adapter sends and
  107.    receives packets over the network. A regular adapter can perform only
  108.    one operation at a time (half-duplexing). The PRO/100+ adapter has the
  109.    ability to send and receive packets at the same time (full-duplexing).
  110.    In order to reap the benefits of full duplexing, you MUST have a full
  111.    duplex hub.
  112.  
  113.          EtherExpress PRO/100+ TX adapter: Supports auto-negotiate, full
  114.          and half duplex at 10 or 100 Mbps.
  115.  
  116.          EtherExpress PRO/100B T4 adapter: Supports full and half duplex
  117.          at 10 Mbps; supports only half duplex at 100 Mbps.  Auto-
  118.          negotiate is not a valid option at either speed.
  119.    
  120.    Auto Duplex: The adapter negotiates with the hub how to send/receive
  121.       packets, either full or half duplex.  You must use a hub that
  122.       supports Auto-negotiation (also known as Nway)
  123.    
  124.    Full Duplex: The adapter sends and receives packets at the same time.
  125.       This improves the performance of your adapter. Set duplex mode to
  126.       full duplex ONLY if you have a full duplex hub.
  127.    
  128.    Half Duplex: The adapter performs one operation at a time. It either
  129.       sends or receives.
  130.  
  131. Note: If you select Full duplex you must manually set the Speed parameter
  132.       to 100. Do not leave speed set to auto-detect.
  133.  
  134. The PRO/100 adapter has the added ability to "talk" to the hub and
  135. determine at which mode to communicate (either full or half duplex). This
  136. is called auto-negotiation. You must have an auto-negotiating hub (an
  137. NWay* hub) to get full duplex support with the Duplex mode set to Auto
  138. Duplex Detect. If you don't have an auto-negotiating hub, set Duplex mode
  139. to Full Duplex and if you are operating at 100Mbs, you must set the Speed
  140. parameter to 100.  Auto-speed detect will not work at 100mb.

  142. Coalesce Buffers - Recommended setting:  8
  143.    
  144.    Number of memory buffers available to the driver in case the driver
  145.    runs out of available Map Registers. This packet area is also used
  146.    when a packet consists of many fragments.
  147.  
  148. Map Registers - Recommended Setting: 64
  149.    
  150.    Map registers are system resources used in physical to virtual address
  151.    conversion with bus mastering cards. The Map Registers parameter
  152.    specifies how many registers should be allocated to the driver.
  153.  
  154. Receive Buffers - Recommended setting:  16
  155.    
  156.    Specifies the number of buffers used by the driver when copying data
  157.    to the protocol memory.
  158.  
  159. Transmit Control Blocks - Recommended setting:  16
  160.    
  161.    Specifies how many transmit control buffers the driver allocates for
  162.    adapter use.  This directly corresponds to how many outstanding
  163.    packets the driver can have in its "send" queue.
  164.  
  165. Speed - Default setting:  Auto Detect
  166.    
  167.    This parameter lets the EtherExpress PRO/100+ adapter know what speed
  168.    to use on the Ethernet wire.  The choices are 10 Mbps, 100 Mbps, and
  169.    Auto Detect.  In Auto Detect mode, the adapter detects if its
  170.    environment can support 100 Mbps speed. It then sets the speed to 100
  171.    if it can, or 10 if it can't. If you are using a crossover cable
  172.    connected to another adapter, set the speed to either 10 Mbps or 100
  173.    Mbps.

  175. Alternatives for adding network cards to Windows 95
  176. ---------------------------------------------------
  177.  
  178. Windows 95 automatically detects Plug and Play devices when they are
  179. added to the system, and either loads drivers for the new device, or
  180. prompts the user for the location of the drivers.  However, this feature
  181. does not work the same on all computers and with all cards.
  182.  
  183. This text provides alternatives for adding drivers for newly installed
  184. hardware. One of these should work in cases where the general
  185. instructions above don't work.
